Training and Development
Every Tuesday during the program, interns meet at the Foundation for interactive training and career development. The training exposes interns to the ideas of liberty while equipping them with a framework of economic thinking and problem-solving in order to become more effective advocates of liberty.
Training is varied and consists of four broad components:
- Reading discussions: To understand the philosophical underpinnings of free societies, interns read selections from a variety of disciplines including management, economics, philosophy, and political science. In groups they then discuss the ideas and implications for society, organizations, and individuals. Selections include Ludwig von Mises, Thomas Sowell, Frederic Bastiat, and F.A. Hayek.
- Guest speakers & presentations: Interns are exposed to leaders and experts in policy, communications, non-profit management, and professional development.
- Workshops & simulations: Interactive workshops build practical skills like public speaking, writing, time management, and interviewing. Simulations bring to life concepts of economic thinking, incentives, vision, and integrity.
- Group projects: Interns take training concepts from theory to practice, applying economic thinking principles in team projects and reflecting on the results.
Market-Based Management®
As part of their training and career development, interns are introduced to Market-Based Management (MBM®), the management philosophy of the Foundation and of Koch Industries, Inc. Charles G. Koch attributes the success of Koch Industries – one of the largest privately held company in America – to its ability to apply MBM. Based on the principles that allow free societies to prosper, Market-Based Management unleashes the power of the free market within the organization.
